A SCENT-FREE CAMPAIGN

Message from the President

To Members of the University Community

We Share the Air - Dalhousie UniversityDalhousie has come a long way since it introduced its first scent-free initiative in 1995 (click here to read DAL's Statement on the Use of Scented Products).  It is a leader among Canadian universities in scent reduction initiatives and has been joined by other area organizations, including the Halifax Regional Municipality, the Halifax Regional School Board and many other organizations in the municipality, and across the region.

There is a growing understanding that harm is caused to many people from exposure to scented products.  Scented products make them sick.  The law is also moving towards protection of people with environmental sensitivities.  For example, the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission will consider discrimination complaints by persons with chemical sensitivities on the basis that they have a disability.

Therefore, the University is relaunching We Share the Air, a scent-free campaign that is a co-operative effort between the Environmental Health and Safety Office and the Employment Equity Office.

I encourage you all to read this material and to think about the fact that we do, indeed, 'Share the Air'.

Yours truly,

Tom Traves
